Beechwood House
CDM Principal Designer Services
Background
Bryanston School is a co-educational boarding school in Dorset, and Beechwood House has historically been used as a junior house for its Year 9 boys.
In 2023, it was decided to extend the building, making it suitable for use as a through boarding house for boys aged 13-18. As well as improving facilities, ensuring it would meet their needs over the next 15 years.
Challenges
- A complex project, involving a two-storey pitched roof extension and a single-storey extension to the South-Western façade.
- Boarding capacity needed to be increased, providing accommodation for 64 students, as well as designated wings for each year group and communal spaces which were centrally accessible.
- Access control doors were also required, enabling secure segregation of parts of the building to enhance the flexibility of its use.
Solution
Our CDM services are instrumental in the remodel, refurbishment and extension of Beechwood House, providing additional capacity to accommodate students relocated from the main building.
Communal social spaces will be centrally located, close to the main entrance and staff offices, ensuring good accessibility and safeguarding for the students. Technology that reduces the running costs and energy consumption of the building will also be incorporated into the design.
Mechanical and electrical services have been designed with a sustainable approach, reducing waste and creating a healthy and comfortable environment for everyone on site. Landscaping works will also widen the existing footpath, providing a new vehicular access route for parking at Beechwood House.
Results
- The project is now underway, with our expert construction and design innovations meeting all requirements.
- Access control systems will secure private living quarters, and student bedrooms are organised so that each year group occupies a different wing of the building.
- Student kitchens will be integrated within social spaces, enhancing their functionality and freeing up space elsewhere within the building.
- And the staircase in the new-build wing will act as a fire escape for students, keeping everyone in Beechwood House comfortable, safe and secure.
