Case Study
Morrisons Supermarkets
Asbestos Management
Background
In May 2022, Wm Morrison Supermarkets acquired around 1,400 properties across the UK. These had been trading as McColls Convenience Stores until the business fell into administration.
An extensive programme of refit and rebranding was needed, converting more than 900 of the shops into Morrisons Daily Convenience Stores.
Challenges
- The planned construction work would disturb the structure and fabric of the buildings. And under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, an Asbestos Refurbishment/Demolition Survey was required before any work could begin.
- The scale of the project posed logistical challenges. They needed to ensure that the asbestos surveys and reports were completed safely and swiftly, enabling contractors to begin work on time and avoiding project delays.
- Risk management is critical where there may be materials containing asbestos. A safe environment was needed for the contractors undertaking the work, as well as for staff and customers once the stores reopened.
- Asbestos fibres can cause serious health risks when disturbed. And so, an Asbestos Refurbishment Survey was required to identify where asbestos was present. Inspection and sampling of suspect materials were needed to evaluate the risk of exposure.
- And all to be managed safely and securely in accordance with guidelines set by the HSE.
Solution
Morrisons contacted Squared Circle, in need of our expertise, and we were able to provide our full consultation and Asbestos Management Services.
Understanding the types of asbestos involved is crucial to meet regulations, and our years of experience were key to creating a safe space across multiple properties.
From initial surveys to removal and encapsulation of materials, air clearance and monitoring services at properties where asbestos was identified, we created a secure environment for the refurbishment to take place.
Results
- Our Asbestos Management Services were implemented across a portfolio of over 900 properties.
- With appropriate control and safety measures, we arranged and managed the asbestos removal process, encapsulating identified materials in line with HSG247 guidance.
- As well as arranging air monitoring and air clearance during the removal work, in accordance with HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts Guide.
- Morrisons were able to go ahead with their rebrand and refurbishment project, knowing that we were handling the necessary works, minimising disruption and avoiding delays and risk to the programme of work.
- Giving them the peace of mind that their stores would be a safe place for all, protecting their people and their business.
